In 1535 the first people to explore California was a Spanish guy named Hernando Cortes. He lead a expidition to La Plaz where he opened a small colony. The origin of the state California is believed to come from a book called 'Las Sergas de Esplandian' by Garcia Ordonez de Montalvo which was written in 1510. The book is centered around a mythical spanish island ruled by a queen name Califia. So they named California after the queen of the island. In 1545 the Euorpeans bring typhus to California and hundred thousands of natives get killed. Then in 1542 a explorer from Portugual, named Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo explores California and discovered the Catalina Islands,San Pedro and San Monica and Santa Barbara Islands.. Finally in 1860 the Pony Express starts carrying mail back and fourth from missouri to California.
In 1540 Hernando De Alaroon led a sea expedition up the Gulf of Mexico to the mouth of Colorado river. It became the first europeans on a California sail. In 1579 Sir Francis Drake landed north of San Francisco Bay and he claimed the territory for England. In 1812 mexico won their independance from spain and mexico became the new ruler of California. In 1848 gold was discovered in california and a year later the gold rush started and california be U.S. property with the Treaty of Guadalupe. Also in 1849 there was a fire and it devastated San Franscisco, there was lots of damage from the fire. In 1850 California officailly became the 31st state. In 1906 San Francisco had a earthquake and it killed over 3,000 people and left around 225,000 people homeless. Four years later Angel Islands opened.
In 1911 women won the right to vote and recived there equal rights. In 1933 long beach had a earthquake that caused widespread damage throughout southern california. 1934 a riot took place in San Francisco they called it Bloody Thursday.In 1969 mayor george moscone and superviser harvey milk of california was shot and killed.In 1989 a earthquake hit the bay area at a magnitude of 7.1. In 1992 california became the first state to have two women elected to the U.S. senate the women were Barbara Boxer and Dianne Feinstein. Finally in 2003 the govornor davis was recalled, so Arnold Schwarzenegger was elected to be the govornor of California.
